At age 10, an unexpected twist of fate led her to become heir to the throne of the world’s greatest Empire. At 13, just a mere Princess, she fell in love with a man five years her senior, her third-cousin, Phillip. At 21, she married him and soon bore him their first two children, Charles and Anne. At 25, she inherited the throne… where she still sits today.

Over the course of her nearly seven-decade rule, she has been served by over a dozen prime ministers, met the world’s greatest leaders, watched her offspring embroiled in a series of world-captivating scandals, and buried her mother, sister, and an iconic daughter-in-law. She has seen her approval-ratings plummet so low the monarchy itself was openly questioned, and later publicly rebounded to become the adoring “grandmother” of a grateful nation.

She is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary--Queen Elizabeth II--ruler of the United Kingdom.
And this is her true story.

Episode 7: Reinventing The Royals

At the turn of the millennium, the Queen was battling negative public opinion. The break up of her childrens’ marriages and the death of Princess Diana had affected the monarchy’s popularity. The millennium was an appropriate opportunity to move on from the negative 1990s. She was guest of honour at the Millennium Dome New Year’s Eve Celebrations. As midnight struck, everyone broke into Auld Lang Syne, but the Queen looked ill at ease joining in as she shook Tony Blair’s hand.

Episode 2: Pomp & Circumstance

Planning the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, there was controversy about whether TV cameras would be permitted to cover the ceremony. At first, she resisted. A public outcry compelled a re-think and the whole ceremony was televised, except for the most sacred moment - the anointing of the Queen. Her beauty, dignity and calmness made the event a world-wide success. Further evidence of her deep religious convictions came when she invited US evangelist Billy Graham to preach at Windsor Castle.

Episode 1: Queen In Waiting

Princess Elizabeth grew up in the Piccadilly home of her parents, the Duke and Duchess of York. The Abdication of her uncle, Edward VIII, in 1936 appeared to be a catastrophe to her family, catapulting her nervous father onto the throne as King George VI. Elizabeth became heir to the throne aged 10, and seemed to be a shy girl with a limited education.
